Hurricane Dorian: Rescue groups evacuate Clay County, Jacksonville and other animal shelters8/31/2019 ![]() Mike Merrill got a lot of wet kisses and furry hugs as dogs from the flood-prone Clay County Animal Services shelter in Penney Farms got into his Florida Urgent Rescue van for a ride to safety ahead of Hurricane Dorian. Merrill, founder of the nonprofit Northeast Florida animal welfare organization, also known as FUR, and other group members transported dogs and cats from the Clay animal shelter Friday and Saturday to no-kill animal shelters in Georgia and Virginia. In addition, FUR was evacuating Union County shelter animals as Dorian advanced on Florida. Once the storm passes, Merrill said they plan to transport shelter animals from Putnam and Bradford counties after the hurricane passes Northeast Florida.
