FUR Ukraine Rescue Mission
Florida Urgent Rescue has been on the ground in Ukraine helping to evacuate dogs and cats in danger. Our FUR Urgent Transport Program has done disaster relief missions after many natural disasters. There are some familiar problems. Families evacuating with their pets, not knowing if they’ll have a home to go back to. Animals left behind, and shelter animals still in danger.
There are also some very big differences. Ukraine is a war zone, and millions of refugees are fleeing to neighboring countries. After a hurricane or tornado, nobody is bombing residential neighborhoods or preventing rescuers from coming in with food, water and supplies. This is the largest humanitarian evacuation since WWII. There are many organizations helping, but the magnitude of the problem is overwhelming. It's heartbreaking for people and animals.
FUR has helped rescue 50 dogs and cats from Ukraine so far. We made multiple trips over the border from Poland to Ukraine, and transported 24 dogs and 6 cats, in addition to assisting a rescue group from Sweden moving 20 dogs and cats from a Kiev shelter. We're working with partners from France, Germany, Portugal, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, the U.K., Romania and the Czech Republic, all teaming up to save lives. We're also helping people trying to evacuate with their pets, helping reunite people with their pets, and saving shelter animals.
FUR is going back to Poland to continue helping Ukrainian animals. This problem is so huge and so overwhelming that the animals need all the help they can get. Florida Urgent Rescue has significant out of pocket expenses to transport animals. Given the distance from home, we're focusing on transporting animals to European partners. If you'd like to help, please consider a tax-deductible donation. Florida Urgent Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and a GuideStar Platinum participant.
